The bulk freighter "CANADA MARQUIS" approaching the flight locks of the fourth Welland Canal at Thorold, 1984. "CANADA MARQUIS," a bulk freighter built in 1983 in Glasgow, Scotland for Misener Transportation of St. Catharines, Ontario, has a cargo capacity of about 25,000 tons. The huge carrier, entering Lock 4, is 730 feet long and squared off at the stern to maximize the amount of ship that can fit into the 80-foot by 800-foot long locks. In fact, the canal is officially named the Welland Ship Canal because it can handle ocean-going ships. The surge tank in the background is part of the St. Lawrence Seaway Welland Canal hydro generating station. -
The propellor "ASIA" downbound in the second Welland Canal at Port Colborne, circa 1880. Old meets new in Port Colborne harbour. These two lake vessels depict the transition period of the late 1800's, from schooners to 750 ton cargo capacity propellor steamers such as the "ASIA." Grain elevators and the Welland Railway tracks and cars, in the background, show Port Colborne's importance then, as a busy trans-shipment point. Since heavily loaded carriers would have scraped bottom in the shallow locks of the second Welland Canal, some cargo was unloaded and shipped by rail to the end of the canal. The "ASIA" was a combined package freighter and passenger steamer. -
Lake schooner "YORK" locking through the first Welland Canal at Port Dalhousie, circa 1840. The "YORK" was a typical schooner that plied the Great Lakes carrying about 165 tons of supplies from Montreal or Toronto to settlements along the upper lakes. On the return trip, the schooners would carry grain, wood, or other raw materials. The original Welland Canal had 40 wooden locks, operated by lock-tenders. Tow-boys, driving teams of horses, would pull the vessels through the canal system. The first locks measured 22 feet wide by 110 feet long, considerably smaller than today's locks. In the right background sits the lock-tender's cabin. -
