Watercolour CollectionOver the course of three years in the mid-1970s, the Niagara Falls Heritage Foundation received grants from the Canada Works Programs. These grants enabled the foundation to have a series of watercolours painted, mainly based on famous paintings of Niagara from earlier centuries. In addition, watercolours of major events of historical importance, such as the battles of the War of 1812, were produced. The aim of these paintings was to have readily reproducible art works of Niagara Falls. When the Foundation disbanded in the mid-1990s. ownership of these paintings was transferred to the Niagara Falls Public Library.

Maid of the Mist in Whirlpool Rapids In 1861, because of a financial crisis and the coming American Civil War, the Maid of the Mist was sold at auction to a Canadian firm on the condition that it be delivered to Lake Ontario. There was only one way to get there and that meant taking the boat downstream through the Great Gorge Whirlpool Rapids and the Whirlpool. This trip was undertaken by Captain Joel Robinson and two crew members on June 6th 1881 excerpted from Thunder Alley
