Oxen hauling wagons ;
en-CA Niagara Falls Heritage Foundation Government of Canada Local Initiatives Grant AK 2403-9 1974 - 1975 ; research by George Seibel ; The Hamilton syndicate which won the concession to carry goods from Queenston to Chippawa employed the local farmers and their teams. In the busy days of the portage as many as 60 wagons would be loaded at Queenston in one day. No farmer was allowed to supply more than two teams for hire. The extra income received by this portage work enabled the early settlers to aquire goods over and above the bare necessities of life. The amounts earned were recorded in Portage Accounts and they drew against these accounts in purchasing goods, excerpted from The Niagara Portage Road by Ernest W Green ;
