Farini as Biddy O'Toole the Irish washer woman carried the patent washing machine to the centre of the rope, positioned it and then drew up water from the River to fill the mahine. He then proceeded to wash a number of handkerchiefs given to him for that purpose by ladies who were part of the crowd, excerpted from the Niagara Falls Gazette ; artistic recreation from a stereograph by Platt D Babbitt ; courtesy Niagara by Ralph Greenhill and Thomas D Mahoney ;
