Solution channel in sectioned limestone block Here we have a minature example of how most caves are formed. Small deposits of salt or other solutions gradually erode away a path in rock, creating a channel in which that solution continues to flow. If left long enough, this solution channel would have eventually become an actual cave. -
Gully north of McFarland House Buried gorge -
Gully at McFarland House Body of water visible through trees is the Niagara River. The property upon which McFarland House stands also serves as the cross-over of the buried gorge. -

Birthplace of Niagara Falls On the U.S. side of the Niagara Gorge one may find a sloping patch of land running along the edge of the Escarpment (the grassy spot to the left of this image). This is the spot where waters first poured over the rockface and, over many years of redirection both natural and man-made, have come to be the present Niagara Falls. -

Whirlpool Rapids and Gorge wall (U.S. side) From this view one may see the extent to which the diversion of water for hydro-electric use effects the flow of the river. Notice the exposed rock on the far side of the water as well as the large sandstone boulders which would normally be at least partially covered by water. -
Whirlpool Rapids and American Gorge wall This is an interesting image of the Whirlpool and its banks due to the unusually large area of exposed rock on the U.S. side. Whether a result of natural conditions (eg. low water level) or intentional actions (eg. dewatering for electric power) it is very rare that the Whirlpool Rapids are seen this low. -
