During a two-year period between 1962-64, a young group of girls at Princess Margaret School were asked by their Physical Education teacher, Marg (Saunders) Newton, to come to St. Martin’s Church to learn to play basketball. This is where the basic skills and foundation for the future Stamford stars was set in motion.
The majority of these girls then moved on to Stamford Collegiate in September 1964, as grade nine students, after winning the Ontario Church League Championship in the spring. The key to the success of this team was the fact that coach Marg Newton came to Stamford to teach and coach in 1964, to be with the team she had coached at both Princess Margaret and St. Martin’s Church.
With the strong nucleus of players, coupled with the same coach, the dynasty began. The Stamford Girls Basketball team brought accolades to Stamford during the late 1960's. Their winning streak alone, of more than 50 consecutive games, with no losses in more than three years, set them apart from other girls’ teams in Southern Ontario. To accomplish this, they went undefeated in all league games, captured the Zone IV Championship for three straight seasons and then went on to win the Southern Ontario Championship at the end of each season. It should be noted that there was no Provincial Championship for girls basketball at this time.
With Coach Marg Newton’s superb knowledge of the game, playing credentials, coaching methods and the fact she was an excellent mentor and role model, she prepared many of the players to go on and play University basketball. She also inspired some of her players to become Physical Education coaches and teachers, which is a tribute to the impact she had on many lives. The long standing winning streak of the Stamford Collegiate Girls Basketball teams of 1964-1966 was an outstanding accomplishment. Their achievements have earned them a well-deserved place in the Niagara Falls Sports Wall of Fame.
