Wayne Hodgson, is regarded as an exceptional role model within the sport of rugby in Niagara Falls. His commitment to the game began in 1968 as a player with the Niagara Wasps Rugby Club. His 20 year playing career included: captaining the squad, winning intermediate cup championships and receiving numerous Most Valuable Player and Person of the Year Awards. Perhaps Wayne’s biggest contributions came off the pitch. In 1970, Wayne joined the Niagara Wasps Executive and over the years has served as President, Treasurer, Grounds Keeper, and Club House Manager. For decades, Wayne helped to generate funds through bingo revenues. These revenues continue to go toward the development of elementary, high school and junior rugby clubs, helping to grow the game of rugby in Niagara Falls. Additionally, Wayne purchased land within the limits of the City of Niagara Falls to be developed into Rugby fields. In 2006, Rugby Ontario Honoured Wayne with a Volunteer Award, recognizing his outstanding dedication to the sport of rugby in Niagara Falls. The Niagara Wasps have created “The Wayne Hodgson Award for Exceptional Lifetime Service” within their organization. The Niagara Falls Sports Wall of Fame is proud to honour Wayne Hodgson.
