Tony appeared on the local cricket scene in 1966 while playing for Welland in the Hamilton & District Cricket League. In 1975 he became president of the Welland Cricket Club and changed the team name to the Welland-Niagara Cricket Club. He hoped this name change would encourage more Niagara Falls residents to play the game. His efforts were rewarded and 2 teams were formed in the late seventies. Games were played at Mount Carmel Field ; In 1980 Tony became involved in umpiring. This is where Tony made his name in the sport of Cricket. From 1980 to 1982 he was umpire-in-chief of the H&D league while forming an umpire certification committee. This committee trained instructors in each province allowing them to certify cricket umpires in their own Provinces. Tony helped establish a similar committee for the United States Cricket Association in 1984. In 1982, Tony received the Canadian Cricket Association Award for successfully establishing this Committee ; From 1981 to 1992, Tony was umpire-in-chief for the Ontario Cricket Association. The OCA covered 5 leagues and about 260 teams. Besides arranging umpires for inter-league matches and international games, Tony was able to find time to do a bit of umpiring himself: The first World Masters games in Toronto in 1983 ; International games at Exhibition Stadium and Skydome in Toronto ; Canadian Cricket Assoc. tournaments from Montreal to Vancouver ; Cricket matches in the USA ; From 1981 to 1992, Tony served on the Ontario Cricket Association Board of Control. A few of the Board’s responsibilities were finances, expansion, and tournaments. In 1992, Tony was awarded he Commemorative Medal for the 125th Anniversary of Canadian Confederation.
