en-CA father of Joseph Donald Rankin; served in US military; by time of WW I he had retired from Michigan National Guard with rank of Captain after 15 yrs of service including war with Spain 1898; Sept 1917 commissioned and assigned to command 52nd Aero Squadron; Oct 1917 sailed for service in Central France to Issoudon to establish the largest training camp for aviation ever built; Jan 5,1918 detached from 52nd and assigned as Supply Officer of the first American Combat group to be formed for operations on the front, the 1st Pursuit Group; established an airdrome at Ville Neuve-Les-Vertus; after Armistice in command of 4yh Air Park; march to Coblenz (Koblenz) bridgehead; May 1919 promoted to Major and assigned commandment of 1st Air Park;
