Myer Salit foundedthe companyin Niagara"Fallsin 1905. From the mosthumblestartof the
scrapbusinessthis Polish immigrantbeganwith a singlehorseandcart.
After WW II Mr. Salit's son-il'l-law, Irvin 'Feldmanjoined tile company. In 1955 his grandson,
Larry Cohenjoined the company. The company diversified the services in the mid 1950's and
began with the distribution of new and used steel to the local industry. Following Mr. Salit's
death in 1958 the company continued to grow and in the mid 1960's the company branched out
and became a reinforcing steel (rebar) fabricator known as Salit Steel.
StevenCohen,Larry's sonjoined the family businessin 1981. Mr. Feldmanretired in the mid
1980'sand shortly afterthe scrapdivision was sold.
Todaythe companycontinuesto flourish in its two primary divisions,Rebarand SteelService
Centreserving SouthernOntario. The companyalso hasa division in NiagaraFalls, New York
which servicesnortheasternUnited States.
Salit Steel is located at 7771 Stanley Avenue and currently employs ~ 150 people.
Unfortunately, Larry Cohen and his son Steven were not able to be in attendancethis evening due
to a family commitment. I will be pleased to present their plaque to them later this year.
