Description on back: The grandeur and loveliness of the Niagara Falls in summer is replaced in winter by a not less majestic but more forbidding aspect. The mighty sweep of the waters does not allow of any formation of ice in the rapids above or below the falls, but at the edges of the river, in the shallows, snows of heaven descend to add their pure white to the glistening green of the rushing waters, the deep purple of the ice behind the flowing curtain and the brilliant hues of the giant icicles reflecting the rays of the sun. And however long a visitor may linger, new beauties will presnt themselves, and the greater will be his appreciation with every moment.

Prospect Park and Niagara Falls in Winter

Back description: The nearest and most comprehensive view of the mighty Niagara Falls is had from Prospect Park, which is on the American side next to the falling waters. At Prospect park we stand only a couple of feet above the American stream, just where it makes its smooth downward curve. We might touch it with our hands, as it bends, solid and glassy, over the long ledge of rock. We can lean on the rails and note how soon its polished surface breaks into silvery fragments, powders into glistening dust; and far beneath we can see the frosty mass strike black boulders and over and between them, flow off as frosted torrents into the dark green flood of gorge. From a distance the American Falls look quite straight. When we stand beside it, we see that its lines curve inward and outward. As we gaze down upon these, every change in the angle of vision and in the strength and direction of the light gives a new effect.

Niagara Falls Suspension Bridge

Niagara Falls Suspension bridge was the world's first railway suspension bridge. It spanned 825 feet (251 m) and stood 2.5 miles (4 km) downstream from Niagara Falls from 1855 to 1897. It carried mixed traffic on its two decks across the Niagara River, trains on the upper deck and pedestrians and carriages on the lower deck.
