The house was built around 1825 by John Thompson, on his farm which extended to Stanley Avenue. He was the youngest child of Joan and Jeanet (Jeanette?)Thompson who settled at the Whirlpool in 1785. Interesting features of this stone house include walls that are 3 feet thick, 28 foot hand hewn beams and walnut stair railings ;

Burrell Hecock last seen in this photo, stranded on an Ice Floe in the Niagara River after attempting to rescue others

The Ice Bridge broke apart, with Mr. & Mrs. Eldridge Stanton stranded on a piece of Ice. Burrell Hecock attempted to rescue them but all 3 perished in the Lower Niagara River at the Whirlpool Rapids

Memorial Service for Burrell Hecock who died trying to rescue Mr. & Mrs. Eldridge Stanton when Ice Bridge broke apart

The Ice Bridge in the Niagara River broke apart on February 4 1912. Mr. & Mrs. Eldridge Stanton were stranded on a piece of ice, Burrell Hecock attempted to rescue them but all 3 perished in the Lower Niagara River at the Whirlpool Rapids ;

Burrell Hecock b.March 3 1895 d. February 4 1912

Burrell died in the Lower Niagara River, when the Ice Bridge broke apart, disintegrating in the Whirlpool Rapids. He had attempted to rescue the Stanton's but all 3 people perished that day ;

5102 Portage Rd - Arthur Holman House

In 1914 Arthur Holman built this house on his farm. After the death of Mr and Mrs Holman the large greenhouses which stood near the house were demolished. Seniors' Housing now (2004) occupies part of the site, the residence still exists ;
