Description

en-CA This was the shop of William Lowell, wherein he laid the foundation of his fortune between 1830 and 1860. It stood then at the North-West corner of Main street and Lundy's Lane. Lowell sold his business to Cranley Kerby, with whom John Wills had a partnership for a time. The Village telegraph office was located there. The building stood on a higher foundation, with a stoep, or verandah. On a Hallowe'en in the early 1890's, small boys annoyed the tenants of the upper flat by throwing rubbish up their stairs, reached by the side door shown in the picture. The angry tenant rushed into the street after them and fired a shot over their heads from a revolver. The bullet ricocheted and struck a small son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Dett, killing him. The man who fired the shot was sent to the penitentiary for a short term.
