- en-CA Scale of tunnel, Crosscut & bottom part of shaft at tunnel elevation. 1. At extreme left of picture notice 9ft high concrete ring (in white). 2. White uprights under ring (in white) are 12x12 timbers which are continuous for the full height of the shaft 350ft 3. At extreme right of picture, notice ribs in section of tunnel 4. In between tunnel and shaft, the ribs represent the crosscut section. The steel 8in ribs are set at 4ft center. Steel lagging or 3" planking are set in between these to protect all personnel from falling rocks 5. The 2" pipe running along the tunnel and the crosscut through the shaft up to the surface are 2 6" wooden ducts which are used for ventilation 6. Notice mining cars on tracks in section of tunnel. The cars were never used on account of the wet and mucky surface of the tunnel
