Photographs were taken by Fred Helie, a worker on the project sometime between 1950 - 1958
en-CA Shaft at tunnel elevation. From this elevation the shaft is 32 ft diameter all the way up to the surface 350 ft. From this point down, the shaft is reduced to 24ft diameter for the next 60ft and then still reduced to 16ft diameter for the remainder of the way down to the sump pit 70ft below. Total height above tunnel floor, at Shaft no.1 350ft total height below tunnel floor to the sump pit 130ft. Height of crosscut section 42ft. Total from surface to pit 480ft. The 36 in. steel girders you see in these pictures are set at the tunnel floor elevation, or resting on the 24 ft diameter opening
