en-CA Alec Tanos’s love of the game of ice hockey inspired him to become a coach with the Canadian Legion Minor Hockey League in 1951. He was blessed with a wonderful skill set that enabled him to coach with great joy and enthusiasm for 14 years. From there he moved on to the Niagara Falls Minor Hockey Association, where his tenure as a coach continued uninterrupted until 1991. Alec’s coaching career included a wide range of ages (Pee-Wee, Bantam, Midget, Junior “B”) and several of his teams rewarded him with championship seasons. It was not well known to local hockey enthusiasts that Alec was the first person in Niagara Falls to rent an hour of ice time when the Niagara Falls Memorial Arena first opened. That hour’s rental was still intact until the arena’s closure in 2010. Alec’s passion for the game of hockey was shared with many people in Niagara Falls. He had a big enough yard to accommodate a large rink every winter. For 19 years, Alec volunteered his rink and his home to the local powder puff teams to practice on. If any of the girl’s teams couldn’t afford ice time at the local arenas, they were always welcome at Alec’s outdoor rink. Alec Tanos was not only a notable part of Niagara’s hockey scene, but a man of character and compassion for all his players. His focus was teamwork, sportsmanship, and responsible work ethics. He will always be remembered as an outstanding role model who was admired and respected in the hockey community.
