Whirlpool Rapids and Gorge wall (U.S. side) From this view one may see the extent to which the diversion of water for hydro-electric use effects the flow of the river. Notice the exposed rock on the far side of the water as well as the large sandstone boulders which would normally be at least partially covered by water. -

Whirlpool Rapids and American Gorge wall This is an interesting image of the Whirlpool and its banks due to the unusually large area of exposed rock on the U.S. side. Whether a result of natural conditions (eg. low water level) or intentional actions (eg. dewatering for electric power) it is very rare that the Whirlpool Rapids are seen this low. -
