Located on St. David's Hill, this monument serves to indicate the former home of Sir Peregrine Maitland, Lieutenant-Governor of Upper Canada in the early 1800s (appointed in January of 1818). Plaque Reads : Stamford Park In this vicinity was Stamford Park, the 425 acre country estate of Sir Peregrine Maitland, Lieutenant-Governor of Upper Canada, 1818-1828. Hr was a son in law of the Duke of Richmond and a veteran of the Napoleonic Wars. "stamford Cottage" was begun about 1822 and when completed occupied twenty two rooms 'luxuriously furnished". Maitland preferred to live in the quiet atmosphere of this regency style residence rather than at York; Upper Canada's capital. During his stay at "Stamford Park" Maitland contributed to the building of nearby St. John's Anglican Church. In 1828 he came Lieutenant-Govenor of Nova Scotia. The estate was sold in 1833.
