Through the Air : A Narrative of Forty Years' Experience as an Aeronaut This print from the above book is on page 505 and titled "What a Wonderful Cloud Manufactory This Niagara Is." Mr. Wise, John LaMountain, O.A. Gager and William Hyde were in the balloon "Atlantic" which took off from St. Louis, Missouri, July 1, 1859. It flew across the Niagara River just before noon July 2, 1859 and thus these men were the first to fly across the Niagara, and the first to record in print their observations of the Great Falls. Two others had seen the Falls earlier (1847 and 1858) from the air each from a distance of about twenty miles. Mr. Wise, on page 504, states they were 10,000 feet high and 'a bottle of Heidsieck" was uncorked to honour the occasion. From this height they also saw from Fort Erie and Buffalo to Fort Niagara and Youngstown. 'Indeed, there was so much of interest to be seen at one time that it was difficult to dwell upon any single sight without losing a great portion of the whole scene..." The balloon later landed on the shore at the eastern end of Lake Ontario and was the longest balloon flight, in the 19th century. -

Niagara Gorge Trips Raft Recovery on the Niagara River at the Whirlpool A thirty-seven foot long air inflated rubber and nylon raft belonging to Niagara Gorge River Trips Inc. (owned by George Butterfield of Toronto) carrying twenty-seven tourist and two pilots capsized in the Whirlpool Rapids throwing everyone into the wild churning white water. Three passengers died from drowning. Twenty-six survived this ordeal. The accident occurred during the 11th trial run of this raft tour through the Niagara River rapids. The raft had departed from the Maid of the Mist dock at the base of the Prospect Point Tower and was about two mile downstream of a five mile route to Lewiston, New York. The three dead persons were identified as: Julia Martinez, age 30 of Toronto; David Ross, age 37 of Toronto and Anthony Sawczyk, age 24 of Niagara Falls, New York. Three of the survivors were admitted to the Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center with serious injuries. Each of the passengers had paid fee of $20 for this journey. The youngest passenger was 16 years old and the oldest was 52 years old. Four of the passengers were women. To further add to this tragedy, one man, piloting a 22 foot - 250 horsepower jet boat died of a heart attack while attempting to recover this raft from the Whirlpool -

Steamboating in Muskoka 1866-1959, Gravenhurst, Ontario Plaque Text: Steam navigation on the Muskoka Lakes began in 1866, when the paddle vessel "Wenonah" went into service. Built at Gravenhurst, she was owned by A.P. Cockburn (1837-1905), who served as the federal member of parliament for Muskoka, 1872-82, and for North Ontario, 1882-87. The "Wenonah" was the first of a line of ships known after 1872 as the Northern Lakes Navigation Company, and after 1949 as the Muskoka Lakes Line. Its ships were among many which contributed to the early and rapid development of Muskoka as a lumbering and resort region. The steamboat gradually gave way to the automobile, and the last two, "Segwun" (1887) and "Sagamo" (1906) ceased operation in 1958. The burned hull of the ship "Sagamo" can be seen in the background. -
Court House and Gaol 1817-1866 Plaque, Niagara on the Lake Plaque Text: Here stood the court-house and gaol of the Niagara District. Erected in 1817, they were considered to be among the finest public buildings in the province. Robert Gourlay, the radical reformer, was imprisoned and tried for sedition here in 1819. In 1837 an escaped American slave, Moseby, threatened with return to his master, was forcibly rescued here by local negroes abetted by other residents of Niagara. The courts moved elsewhere in 1847, and the gaol closed in 1866. -
Sir Roger Hale Sheaffe Memorial Plaque, Queenston Heights Plaque Text: On October 13, 1812, following Isaac Brock's death in a preceding assault, Major-General Sheaffe assumed command and led a successful attack which dislodged an invading American force from Queenston Heights. Born in Boston, Mass., Sheaffe was commissioned in the British army in 1778 and fought in the American Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars. Arriving in Upper Canada in 1812, he served as Administrator of the province 1812-13, and returned to England in the latter year. He was created a baronet in 1813, attained the rank of general in 1838 and died in Edinburgh, Scotland. -
Plaque commemorating residence of Sir Peregrine Maitland, St. David's Hill Located on St. David's Hill, this monument serves to indicate the former home of Sir Peregrine Maitland, Lieutenant-Governor of Upper Canada in the early 1800s (appointed in January of 1818). Plaque Reads : Stamford Park In this vicinity was Stamford Park, the 425 acre country estate of Sir Peregrine Maitland, Lieutenant-Governor of Upper Canada, 1818-1828. Hr was a son in law of the Duke of Richmond and a veteran of the Napoleonic Wars. "stamford Cottage" was begun about 1822 and when completed occupied twenty two rooms 'luxuriously furnished". Maitland preferred to live in the quiet atmosphere of this regency style residence rather than at York; Upper Canada's capital. During his stay at "Stamford Park" Maitland contributed to the building of nearby St. John's Anglican Church. In 1828 he came Lieutenant-Govenor of Nova Scotia. The estate was sold in 1833.
