Title
Men on cable car over the Niagara River, Clifton Hotel in background
Description
date circa 1868
en-CA The men in the cable car are engaged in the work of binding together seven smaller cables, into one large cable. The bridge work began in February when a rope was pulled across the ice bridge, then this rope was used to draw over the first cable composed of 133 no. 9 wires. Seven of theses smaller cables were drawn over, then bound together into one cable 7 inches in diameter. The total weight of the suspended portion of each of the main cables was 82 tons. The Niagara Gazette of August 5th 1868 reported that the 5th cable had been placed in position the day before and that "the cables and anchorage are of great strength and look as if they would last as long as trees grow and waters run" - George Seibel ;
