- en-CA Algie Vant’s name has often been associated with hockey, because of his coaching and management of minor hockey teams in Niagara Falls from 1966 to 1980. More importantly, he was known for providing the driving force in the revival of minor lacrosse in the Niagara Region. During the spring and summer of 1970, Algie promoted two local minor lacrosse teams (peewee and novice aged); this stirred great interest in Niagara Falls. Vant headed the minor lacrosse executive for the following three seasons and saw great growth and by 1972 teams were formed in Novice, Peewee, Bantam, Midget and Juvenile. By 1976, approximately 200 boys and even one girl were playing lacrosse! Algie Vant shaped minor lacrosse in Niagara Falls and across the Niagara Region. He managed the Jr. ‘B’ Niagara Warriors for the 1972 season. He also coached baseball and curling and was the secretary of the Niagara Falls Flyers Tier Two Junior Hockey program from 1972 to 1973, as well as being President of Men’s Senior Golf at Legend’s. Algie Vant generously gave his time to lacrosse and other organizations, greatly influencing sport in Niagara Falls.
