Ontario Power Screen House Plaque Plaque: Ontario Power Screen House. The walkway crossing the Ontario Power Generating Station forebay replaces a screen house used to stop debris and ice from entering the plant conduits. The outer weir structure forming the plant forebay closes off the entrance to Dufferin Islands around which the river formerly flowed at depths of two metres. -

On December 7, 1837, William Lyon Mackenzie's 'Patriot' forces were defeated north of Toronto by Loyalist militia and he fled toward the United States. Travelling little-used routes in order to avoid government forces which were scouring the countryside, he reached this vicinity on December 11th. Capt. Samuel McAfee, who owned this property at the time, provided Mackenzie with a boat to cross the Niagara River.While the rebel leader was embarking, Col. James Kerby arrived with a detachment of militia, but the McAfee family distracted his attention until Mackenzie gained the safety of the American shore. -

Three different companies built many ships on this site during the years 1904 to 1930. At this shipyard, known locally as the “Bridgeburg Shipyard”, four ocean cargo boats such as “War Magic” and “War Vixen” were built in 1917-1919. In 1965 the Niagara Parks Commission began construction of this marina. -

The passage of the first two vessels form lake to lake was achieved in 1829. After “stemming the broad and strong current of Niagara”, the vessels reached Black Rock where they were met with bursts of applause and honoured by the discharge of artillery from The Terrace. As stated in the biography of William Hamilton Merritt, the canal's founder, “The Welland Canal was now an accomplished fact. The artificial wedding of the Great Lakes of the west and north with the waters of the Ontario, and eventually with the St. Lawrence and the ocean was complete” -

Ontario Power Generating Station in ice. The Niagara River has formed an ice bridge which has enveloped the generating station. Above the gorge is the Canadian side and atop the escarpment can be seen the large Ontario Power Co. Transformer building which is now the site of the Fallsview Casino. -

Ice on the Generators in the Ontario Generating Station In 1909 and 1938 water and ice flooded into the Ontario Power Generating Station at the base of the Horseshoe Falls causing damage. -
Frozen American Falls The American Falls carry only 10% of the water from the Upper Niagara River. As a result their flow is blocked more easily and has resulted in them freezing over on five recorded occasions; 1848, 1909, 1936, 1938, and 1949. -
