"This view shows the abutments built on the US shore for the new steel arch bridge. The retaining wall built to protect the north abutment from the wash of the Niagara Power tunnel is easily discernible. Notice the bare debris slope above the abutments - the foliage was all uprooted there when the huge stone for the abutments were lowered down the bank to the site. The Daily Cataract of Niagara Falls new York, September 13 1898 wrote about the construction of the abutments as follows three of the stones used in the abutment on the New York State side weighed 6 tons apiece. In lowering them over the cliff a derrick of unusual strength was called into service. The stones were dropped 60 feet to the top of a skidway of planks laid on the debris slope of the bank and lowered along this skidway to the point of work It can be seen that the new bridge will be built up under and to the south of the suspension span shown in the picture". en-CA "this 1897 photograph was published to show the tailrace tunnel outlet from the hydraulic power house of the Dean Adams Generating Plant which was located above the American falls. The retaining wall built as part of the abutments of the new arch bridge is visible just to the right of the tailrace outflow of the Niagara Falls Power Company and the two stone abutments have already been put in place" "Niagara Falls - the greatest electric and power city of the world", Niagara Falls, NY, 1897
