- Description

- en-CA The floe with the couple apparently kneeling in prayer floated over several of the larger waves of the rapids and then another floe struck it and the couple passed from view and were not seen again. Young Hecock preceeded them by several minutes. He too succeeded in grasping the rope dangling from the cantilever bridge and held on to it for a few seconds while the men at the other end pulled away with almost superhuman effort. When they had lifted the lad some eighty feet he let go and fell with a thud that could be heard from the bridge. He struck face downward, but was seen to rise and stagger to his feet, leaving a large boold stain on the ice. He then disappeared as did the couple. Hecock was only seventeen years old.
