Birney), John, Abel, Phoebe Lucas, Rebecca Hughson, William, Robert and Ephraim; enlisted with 79th Gordon Highlanders; 1758 capture of Louisburg; 1759 Plains of Abraham; Mar 18,1779 tried and condemned to death as British spy / sentence overturned on technicality by George Washinngton; wood turner by trade; settled with wife and young family in Pennsylvania; appointed Justice of the Peace and Magistrate and served until Revolutionary War; 1782 arrived in Niagara; among the first white settlers in area; U.E.L. of Barton Township; family origins in Devon, England;
