An inspired Stamford High School Basketball Team became the Cinderella team of a most hectic and closely contested senior boys' All Ontario Basketball Tournament. Stamford had earlier been defeated by Niagara Falls Collegiate in the District final but had been given a bye into the championship as the Niagara District representative. Once in the tournament, they rolled to an unexpected but well earned championship. On their way to victory, the Hornets defeated Ottawa Lisgar 65- 47 and then moved into the semi-final with a previously undefeated team from Toronto Northern Vocational. They upset Toronto 43- 40 and were into the finals. In the championship game, Stamford was matched against defending champion Windsor Patterson High School. Both teams were weary from the afternoon semi-finals and played cautious basketball most of the way. The game was tied 24-24 at the half but Stamford pulled away at the end for the 54-47 victory. It was a wild and emotional celebration for the Stamford fans who were there in abundance at the old arena on Victoria Ave. The championship was a perfect ending to a wonderful basketball season.
