Electric Power Plants, Niagara Falls(Reverse Side) Under an agreement between the United States and Canada, a certain amount of water power nature created at Niagara Falls is available for industrial use. Many branches of industries requiring electric power at low rates have sprung into existence and in comparatively short time developed into wonderful enterprises that at this time particularly become centres of industry of national importance. Scientific products needed in many lines of manufacture, especially in the metal industry which this country before largely imported, are now manufactured at Niagara Falls. The carborundum is one of the best known of these products. many electric railway lines in the vicinity of Niagara Falls are supplied with electricity from central stations at Niagara Falls. The city of Toronto, Canada, and most of the towns surrounding Niagara are supplied with electric light and power at low cost from Niagara Falls. -

Winter on Queen Street, Niagara on-the-Lake On Back: The old town of Niagara-on-the Lake attracts strollers any time of year, even in winter. The town's ornate old courthouse, the scene of many trials, municipal meetings and the first home of Shaw festival, sets the tone for the downtown area, where old buildings have been spruced up. Even the new buildings have been designed to blend in with buildings more than a century old. Niagara-on-the lake, a place of restored buildings, stately, old homes and quiet contemplation for most of the year, gets an influx of tourists in the summer months as people arrive to soak up some history. They all want to get a look at Upper Canada's first capital and one of the oldest settlements west of Montreal. Niagara on-the-lake is also at one end of the extensive Niagara parks system with its historic sites, recreation areas and parkland designed to preserve the scenic qualities of the Niagara River. -

Toronto Power Generating Station Plaque Toronto Power Generating Station plaque in front of the building. “Opened in 1906 to supply the Toronto market, this generating station was the first wholly Canadian-owned hydro-electric facility at Niagara Falls. Engineers adapted advanced European and American technologies to a difficult site in a bold and enterprising way. The station's palatial powerhouse was designed by the eminent Toronto architect E.J. Lennox to complement the scenic setting. Symmetrical, colonnaded and faced in limestone, it is an early and unusual application of Beaux-Arts design to an industrial site in Canada. Purchased by Ontario Hydro in 1922, the station operated until 1974.” -

Ball's Grist Mill, Town of Lincoln Plaque Text: By 1809 John and George Ball had constructed a four-storey grist-mill here on Twenty Mile Creek. Equipped with two run of stones, the mill provided flour for British troops during the War of 1812. It was expanded during the 1840's and by the end of the decade was part of a complex which included sawmills and woollen factories. About that time George Peter Mann Ball laid out a village plot named Glen Elgin. His plans for an industrial community were thwarted, however, when the Great Western Railway by-passed the site in the early fifties. By 1900 the industries had declined and the grist-mill had been partially dismantled. Closed in 1910, the mill was acquired from the Ball family in 1962 by the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority. -
