Old meets new in Port Colborne harbour. These two lake vessels depict the transition period of the late 1800's, from schooners to 750 ton cargo capacity propellor steamers such as the "ASIA." Grain elevators and the Welland Railway tracks and cars, in the background, show Port Colborne's importance then, as a busy trans-shipment point. Since heavily loaded carriers would have scraped bottom in the shallow locks of the second Welland Canal, some cargo was unloaded and shipped by rail to the end of the canal. The "ASIA" was a combined package freighter and passenger steamer.
