The barrel of George Strathakis on the morning after his fatal trip, July 5, 1930 George L. Stathakis was a 46 years old from Buffalo. His intention was to make money by selling the movie rights to his trip over the Horseshoe Falls in a barrel. Also along for the ride was his pet turtle "Sonny Boy". "Sonny Boy" survived but George, alas, did not. The trip on July 5, 1930 was successful but the sheer force of the water kept the barrel submerged and the limited oxygen supply ran out. The picture depicts the barrel the next morning after it was finally recovered. -

Ice Bridge and Mounds, Niagara Falls Description on back: The grandeur and loveliness of the Niagara Falls in summer is replaced in winter by a not less majestic but more forbidding aspect. The mighty sweep of the waters does not allow of any formation of ice in the rapids above or below the falls, but at the edges of the river, in the shallows, snows of heaven descend to add their pure white to the glistening green of the rushing waters, the deep purple of the ice behind the flowing curtain and the brilliant hues of the giant icicles reflecting the rays of the sun. And however long a visitor may linger, new beauties will presnt themselves, and the greater will be his appreciation with every moment. -

Plaque near Miller's Creek along the Niagara Parkway : The Welland Canal at the Niagara Frontier Plaque near Miller's Creek along the Niagara Parkway: The Welland Canal at the Niagara Frontier. The passage of the first two vessels form lake to lake was achieved in 1829. After “stemming the broad and strong current of Niagara”, the vessels reached Black Rock where they were met with bursts of applause and honoured by the discharge of artillery from The Terrace. As stated in the biography of William Hamilton Merritt, the canal's founder, “The Welland Canal was now an accomplished fact. The artificial wedding of the Great Lakes of the west and north with the waters of the Ontario, and eventually with the St. Lawrence and the ocean was complete” -

The Hubbard Point Caves from "Our Romantic Niagara" by A.H. Tiplin Indian cave or Redskin Cave is located 18 metres (60 feet) north of Sunny's cave. It was explored and its measurements were recorded by Scot A. Ensminger and B.R. Horncastle, in 1978. It is a much larger and interesting cave than bender's cave, but it is inaccessble, except by the use of rock climbing rquipment. The entrance is 15 metres (50 feet) wide, 2.5 to 3 metres (8 to 10 feet) high, and 2.1 to 6etres (7 to 20 feet) deep. Near the north side of the entrance, at the top slope, there is a 7.8 metres (26 feet) long crawlway to the west. This leads into a small room, 3 metres (10 feet) in diameter and 0.9 metres (3 feet) high. Two more crawlways lead from this room. One to the west is blocked by breakdowns in 1.5 metres (5 feet). The other, to the south, connects with a small room. A crawlway from this room, to the west, is blocked by dirt in a few feet. The cave contains small stalactites, romstone dams that are 5 centimetres (2 inches) high and flowstone. Near the south side of the entrance is another short crawlway which leads to a small room. -
