Description
en-CA Inducted into the City of Niagara Falls Sports Wall of Fame January 2011 ; Builder - Ringette 1991 - Present Era ;
en-CA Mike became involved with the sport of ringette when his oldest daughter joined the “bunny” team", 16 years ago, and he has coached ever since. He served as president of the Niagara Falls Ringette Association for 10 years, hosted the Niagara Falls ringette tournament, as well as the regional tournaments with more than eighty teams competing for the title of top team in the region. Mike and his teams have entered in tournaments all over Ontario, and have fund-raised money for trips to Saint Bruno, Quebec; Edmonton, Alberta; and also to Sweden and Finland. When his first daughter enrolled at Brock University he formed a team, and thus Brock ringette was born. The team competes with other University teams for the University Cup which includes teams from the University of Alberta, Simon Frasier, Guelph, Ottawa, Waterloo, Western and York University. The tournament has been hosted by Brock, including help from the Niagara Falls Ringette Association. Over the years Mike has devoted many hours to coaching, refereeing, and fund-raising, with the main goal of keeping ringette alive and growing in the Niagara Region. Never wanting to be in the limelight himself, he liked to see kids of all ages and skill levels have a place to play the sport of ringette. He was recognized in 2006 as the Niagara Falls Reviews volunteer Sports Person of the Year.
